If you need to return something in a store in Israel, the main goal is to be polite, simple, and clear. You do not need perfect Hebrew. A short sentence plus the item and receipt is usually enough.

Useful words

  • להחזיר = to return
  • החזרה = a return
  • קבלה = receipt
  • זיכוי = store credit / refund credit
  • החלפה = exchange
  • פגום = defective / damaged
  • לא מתאים = not suitable
  • מידה = size
  • צבע = color

Basic phrases you can use

  • אני רוצה להחזיר את זה. — I want to return this.
  • אפשר להחליף את זה? — Can I exchange this?
  • יש לי קבלה. — I have the receipt.
  • זה לא מתאים לי. — This doesn’t suit me / isn’t right for me.
  • קניתי את זה אתמול. — I bought this yesterday.
  • זה פגום. — It’s defective.
  • אני רוצה זיכוי. — I want store credit.

If you are not sure whether the store will accept the return, ask first:

  • אפשר להחזיר את זה? — Is it possible to return this?
  • מה מדיניות ההחזרות? — What is the return policy?

A simple conversation

Customer: שלום, אני רוצה להחזיר את זה. יש לי קבלה.

Staff: כן, בטח. למה אתה רוצה להחזיר?

Customer: זה לא מתאים לי / זה פגום / אני צריך מידה אחרת.

Staff: אוקיי. אתה רוצה החזר, החלפה, או זיכוי?

This is a very normal pattern in Israeli shops. If you learn just these three options — החזר (refund), החלפה (exchange), and זיכוי (credit) — you can handle many shopping situations.

What to say for common situations

1) The item is the wrong size

  • אני צריך מידה אחרת. — I need a different size.
  • יש לכם מידה גדולה יותר? — Do you have a bigger size?
  • אפשר להחליף למידה אחרת? — Can I exchange it for another size?

2) The item is damaged

  • הפריט פגום. — The item is defective.
  • זה הגיע שבור. — It arrived broken.
  • אפשר להחזיר בגלל שזה פגום? — Can I return it because it’s defective?

3) You changed your mind

  • פשוט לא מתאים לי. — It just doesn’t work for me.
  • אני רוצה להחזיר בלי להחליף. — I want to return it without exchanging.

Helpful shopping Hebrew

If you also want to practice the language you’ll hear around the store, it helps to know a few related phrases from Hebrew for Movers and Deliveries when something is being delivered, or Hebrew for Paying Bills in Israel for payment-related words. For more everyday customer-service situations, Hebrew for Pharmacies in Israel is also useful because the same polite, direct style shows up there too.

Tips for using Hebrew in the store

  • Start with שלום or סליחה to get attention politely.
  • Keep your sentence short.
  • Show the receipt if you have it.
  • If you do not understand the response, ask:
    • אפשר לדבר לאט יותר? — Can you speak more slowly?
    • אפשר להסביר שוב? — Can you explain again?

In Israel, store staff often move quickly, so being direct helps. You do not need long explanations. A sentence like אני רוצה להחזיר את זה, יש לי קבלה is enough in many cases.

Quick practice

Try saying these out loud:

  1. אני רוצה להחזיר את זה.
  2. אפשר להחליף למידה אחרת?
  3. זה פגום.
  4. אני רוצה זיכוי.

If you can use these four lines comfortably, you are already ready for a lot of real shopping situations in Hebrew.
