In stressful situations, short sentences are usually better than long explanations. You do not need perfect Hebrew. You just need words that help you say who you are, what happened, and whether you need help.
This guide focuses on official and emergency Hebrew. The goal is not to sound fluent. The goal is to be understood quickly.
Very useful words
- מִשְׁטָרָה — police
- שׁוֹטֵר — police officer, male
- שׁוֹטֶרֶת — police officer, female
- תַּחֲנַת מִשְׁטָרָה — police station
- מִקְרֶה — incident / case
- תְּלוּנָה — complaint
- עֵד — witness
- זֶהוּת — identity
- תְּעוּדַת זֶהוּת — ID card
- דַּרְכּוֹן — passport
If you need to ask for help, simple language is best. For example:
- אֲנִי צָרִיךְ עֶזְרָה. — I need help.
- אֲנִי צְרִיכָה עֶזְרָה. — I need help.
- קָרָה מִקְרֶה. — Something happened.
- אֵין לִי בְּעָיוֹת עִם הַמִּשְׁטָרָה. — I do not have a problem with the police.
If a police officer stops you
A common situation is being asked for identification. You may hear:
- תְּעוּדַת זֶהוּת, בְּבַקָּשָׁה. — ID, please.
- אֵיפֹה אַתָּה גָּר? — Where do you live?
- מֵאַיִן אַתָּה? — Where are you from?
- מָה קָרָה? — What happened?
Useful replies:
- הִנֵּה הַתְּעוּדָה שֶׁלִּי. — Here is my ID.
- אֲנִי תּוֹרֵם / תוֹשָׁב. — I am a resident.
- אֲנִי תּוּרִיסְט / תּוּרִיסְטִית. — I am a tourist.
- אֲנִי לֹא מֵבִין. — I do not understand.
- אֶפְשָׁר לְדַבֵּר בְּאַנְגְּלִית? — Can we speak in English?
If you are nervous, you can also say:
- בְּבַקָּשָׁה, לֹא לְדַבֵּר מְהֵרָה. — Please, do not speak quickly.
- תּוּכַל לַחְזוֹר עַל זֶה? — Can you repeat that?
If you need to report something
For a report, keep it short and factual. You can say:
- אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לְהַגִּישׁ תְּלוּנָה. — I want to file a complaint.
- אֲנִי רוֹצָה לְהַגִּישׁ תְּלוּנָה. — I want to file a complaint.
- נִגְנַב לִי הַטֶּלֶפוֹן. — My phone was stolen.
- אָבַד לִי הַדַּרְכּוֹן. — My passport was lost.
- הָיָה כָּאן רֶבַע / רִיב / אִיּוּם. — There was a fight / argument / threat here.
- אֲנִי רָאִיתִי אֶת הַמִּקְרֶה. — I saw the incident.
- זֶה הָיָה בְּ... — It was at...
If you need to describe pain or injury after an incident, this can help too. You may want to review Hebrew for Describing Pain for words like כּוֹאֵב and ways to say where it hurts.
Emergency words you may hear
Some common official words in urgent situations:
- דְּחוֹף — urgent
- מִיָּד — immediately
- עַכְשָׁיו — now
- לְהַזְעִיק — to call urgently / dispatch
- לְדַוֵּחַ — to report
- לִפְנוֹת — to turn to / approach
- לַעֲזוֹב — to leave
- לַעֲצֹר — to stop
If someone tells you לַעֲצֹר or לִפְנוֹת, it is usually best to follow instructions first and ask questions after.
Useful phrases for the station
At a police station, you may need slightly more formal Hebrew:
- אֲנִי צָרִיךְ לְדַבֵּר עִם שׁוֹטֵר. — I need to speak with a police officer.
- אֲנִי צְרִיכָה לְדַבֵּר עִם שׁוֹטֶרֶת. — I need to speak with a police officer.
- אֵין לִי תּוֹר. — I do not have an appointment / queue number.
- אֵיפֹה הַמִּשְׁרָד? — Where is the office?
- אֲנִי צָרִיךְ לַחְתּוֹם. — I need to sign.
- אֲנִי צְרִיכָה עוֹד הֶסְבֵּר. — I need more explanation.
If the issue is connected to another service, like a bank card, phone, or document, it may help to know related everyday Hebrew too. For example, Hebrew for Israeli Service Calls is useful for explaining a problem clearly on the phone.
A simple pattern to remember
When you are stressed, this pattern works well:
- Say אֲנִי צָרִיךְ / צְרִיכָה... — I need...
- Add the problem.
- Ask for help or English.
Examples:
- אֲנִי צָרִיךְ עֶזְרָה.
- אֲנִי צְרִיכָה לְהַגִּישׁ תְּלוּנָה.
- אֲנִי לֹא מֵבִין. אֶפְשָׁר בְּאַנְגְּלִית?
Quick practice
Try saying these out loud:
- תְּעוּדַת זֶהוּת, בְּבַקָּשָׁה.
- אֲנִי צָרִיךְ עֶזְרָה.
- נִגְנַב לִי הַטֶּלֶפוֹן.
- אֲנִי לֹא מֵבִין. אֶפְשָׁר לְדַבֵּר בְּאַנְגְּלִית?
The more you practice a few short lines, the easier it gets to use them under pressure. For more practical everyday Hebrew, you may also want Hebrew for Asking Someone How They Are, especially if you need to start a conversation calmly before explaining the problem.
