If you live in Israel, you’ll quickly need a few polite ways to say: “I can’t right now,” “I’m busy,” or “Maybe later.” These phrases come up all the time — with coworkers, neighbors, friends, and even people you just met. The good news is that Hebrew has simple, natural ways to set a boundary without sounding rude.

The most useful phrase

אני עסוק / אני עסוקה
ani asuk / ani asuka
I’m busy.

Use עסוק if you’re male and עסוקה if you’re female.

This is short, direct, and very common.

Examples:

  • אני עסוק עכשיו. — I’m busy now.
  • אני עסוקה היום. — I’m busy today.
  • אני עסוק, נדבר אחר כך. — I’m busy, we’ll talk later.

A few more natural options

1) I can’t right now

אני לא יכול עכשיו / אני לא יכולה עכשיו
ani lo yakhol achshav / ani lo yekhola achshav

This is useful when you want to say you’re unavailable without giving too much detail.

  • אני לא יכול עכשיו, אני בעבודה. — I can’t right now, I’m at work.
  • אני לא יכולה עכשיו, נדבר בערב. — I can’t right now, let’s talk in the evening.

2) I’m in the middle of something

אני באמצע משהו
ani be’emtza mashehu

This sounds very natural in everyday conversation.

  • סליחה, אני באמצע משהו. — Sorry, I’m in the middle of something.
  • אני באמצע עבודה. — I’m in the middle of work.

3) I’m not free

אני לא פנוי / אני לא פנויה
ani lo panuy / ani lo penuya

This is a useful phrase when someone asks if you’re available.

  • אני לא פנוי עכשיו. — I’m not free right now.
  • אני לא פנויה היום בערב. — I’m not free this evening.

Polite ways to say no

If you want to be a little softer, add a reason or a follow-up.

  • מצטער, אני עסוק עכשיו. — Sorry, I’m busy now.
  • מצטערת, אני לא יכולה היום. — Sorry, I can’t today.
  • אני עסוקה כרגע. — I’m busy at the moment.
  • נדבר מחר? — Can we talk tomorrow?

כרגע means “at the moment” and is very handy in these situations.

Common real-life situations

At work

  • אני עסוק בפגישה. — I’m busy in a meeting.
  • אני לא יכול לדבר עכשיו. — I can’t talk right now.

With friends

  • אני עסוקה היום, אבל פנויה מחר. — I’m busy today, but free tomorrow.
  • אני באמצע משהו, אחזור אליך אחר כך. — I’m in the middle of something, I’ll get back to you later.

By text

A short message is often enough:

  • עסוק עכשיו, אחזור אליך אחר כך. — Busy now, I’ll get back to you later.
  • לא יכולה לדבר כרגע. — Can’t talk right now.

Useful words to know

  • עכשיו — now
  • היום — today
  • כרגע — at the moment
  • אחר כך — later
  • פגישה — meeting
  • עבודה — work

These words help you make your sentence more specific.

A simple formula

You can build many useful sentences with this pattern:

אני + busy word + time

Examples:

  • אני עסוק עכשיו.
  • אני עסוקה היום.
  • אני לא פנוי כרגע.
  • אני באמצע משהו.

Practice

Try saying these out loud:

  1. I’m busy now.
  2. I can’t talk right now.
  3. I’m in the middle of something.
  4. I’m not free today.
  5. Sorry, let’s talk later.

Small tip

In Israel, direct language is often normal, but you can still sound polite by adding סליחה (“sorry/excuse me”) or by giving a short reason. You do not need a long explanation. A simple, clear sentence is usually enough.
